density of nitrogen

Before knowing the density of nitrogen you should know some facts about nitrogen. Nitrogen is an odourless, colourless element found in the soil under our feet, in the water we drink, and in the air, we breathe. Actually, nitrogen is the most abundant element in Earth’s atmosphere, approximately 78% of the atmosphere is nitrogen. Nitrogen is very important for plant growth and can be fixed by lightning or added to soils in fertilisers. Nitrogen is a gas element important to the chemical industry also, and it is used to make fertilisers, nitric acid, nylon, dyes, and explosives. It is a harmless gas. Let’s know about the density of nitrogen

What Is The Density Of Nitrogen?

The density of nitrogen is 0.8064 g/l. Nitrogen is a principal component of the earth’s atmosphere mostly found in gas form. But there is liquid nitrogen also, and the density of liquid nitrogen is also 0.8064 g/l. Now the question is what is the density of nitrogen gas at STP? So, at 32 degrees Fahrenheit and one atmosphere of pressure, the nitrogen density is 0.07807 lb/ cubic foot or 0.0012506 grams/cubic centimetre. STP means standard temperature and pressure and it is 32 degrees Fahrenheit and 1 atmosphere respectively.

Now, you know the density of nitrogen g/l. Let’s know the nitrogen density in other units also.

So, the density of nitrogen kg/m3 is 1.292 kg/m3, the density of nitrogen g/cm3 is 1.2506 g/cm3, the density of nitrogen g/ml is 0.8064 g/ml, and the density of nitrogen lb/ft3 is 38.55 lb/ft3.

Nitrogen easily does not react but it reacts with oxygen and forms nitrogen oxide. And the density of nitrogen oxide is 1.34 kg/m3. So, you know all about the density of nitrogen gas, let’s know the definition of nitrogen density.

Definition Of Density Of Nitrogen

The density of nitrogen gas is defined as the total mass of the nitrogen element to the total volume of the nitrogen element. Or total space occupied by the nitrogen element. Density is mass per unit volume. Generally, you use the formula of mass divided by volume, but nitrogen is a gas, therefore, you need to use the ideal gas law equation. Let’s see it in a symbolic form.

Density of Nitrogen = pressure constant x molar mass of nitrogen/temperature x universal gas constant g/mL

Or

                             ⍴ = PMRT g/mL

Where, P = pressure = 1 atm

             M = molar mass of nitrogen = 28.014 g/mol

             R = gas constant = 0.082057 L⋅atm/K⋅mol

             T = temperature = 273.15 K

Here, all quantities are constant and hence the density of nitrogen is also constant at room temperature.

How To Calculate Density Of Nitrogen?

So, to calculate the density of nitrogen you don’t need to measure its mass and volume because it is already calculated and nitrogen density is fixed. To calculate nitrogen density you need to go to the chemical laboratory. But, scientists already have calculated it for us. Let’s calculate the nitrogen density by using the formula.

The nitrogen gas density formula is as,

 Density of Nitrogen = pressure constant x molar mass of nitrogen temperature x universal gas constant g/L

 Now, just putting the values of constant given above as,

                              ⍴ = 1 atm × 28.014 g/mol0.082057 L⋅atm/K⋅mol ×273.15 K g/L

                             ⍴  =  1.25 g/L

So, the nitrogen density at STP( Standard Temperature Pressure) is 1.25 g/L. This is at STP, it may be changed at different temperatures and pressures, it is ideal.

Actually, you don’t need to calculate nitrogen density because it is constant and here all constants have their predefined values, you need to just put them in the formula and you will get the nitrogen density.

FAQ

What Is The Density Of Nitrogen In G Ml?

Liquid nitrogen, a colourless fluid resembling water in appearance, but with 80.8% of the density (the density of liquid nitrogen at its boiling point is 0.808 g/mL), is a common cryogen. Solid nitrogen has many crystalline modifications.

What Is The Mass Density Of Nitrogen?

The density of nitrogen gas, N2 , at STP is 1.25 g/L .

What Is The Density Of Nitrogen Compared To Air?

Air is heavier than nitrogen. Pure nitrogen is 3% lighter than air.

Does Nitrogen Have Low Density?

The density of nitrogen is greater than the density of oxygen, hence the denser nitrogen would be present in the lower atmosphere. If so it would be deprived of oxygen as it would be pushed to the higher atmosphere due to its low density.

The density of nitrogen is 1.25 kg/m3 at S.T.P.

What Is The Density Of Nitrogen N2 Gas At STP?

Answer and Explanation: The density is approximately 1.25 g/L.

Conclusion

In this article, you come to know that nitrogen is an essential element in the atmosphere of the Earth and also its density is 0.8064 g/l. When you breathe air under pressure, the nitrogen gas in the air dissolves into the tissues of the body. When the pressure is removed from your body, the dissolved nitrogen gas comes out of solution, causing painful and potentially life-threatening conditions known as Type-I and Type-II decompression sickness. Also, high partial pressure of nitrogen gas can impair brain function commonly known as nitrogen narcosis. Now, you know all about nitrogen gas, especially the density of Nitrogen
