Density Of Tungsten

The density of tungsten is one of the main tungsten properties. Tungsten is also called wolfram, a chemical element, an exceptionally strong refractory metal of Group 6 of the periodic table, used in steels to increase hardness and strength and in lamp filaments. The tungsten symbol is W and it was first isolated by the Spanish chemists and mineralogists Juan Jose and Fausto Elhuyar by charcoal reduction of the oxide derived from the mineral wolframite. The amount in Earth’s crust is estimated to be 1.5 parts per million or about 1.5 grams per ton of rock. China is the dominant producer of tungsten. Let’s have a look at the density of tungsten

What Is The Density Of Tungsten?

The density of tungsten is 19.3 mg/m3, which is when in room temperature and standard pressure. The density of tungsten can be denoted in different units. Here is the tungsten density in different units,

  • The density of tungsten in kg/m^3 is 19,450 kg/m3
  • The density of tungsten in g/cm3 is 19.25 g/cm3
  • The density of tungsten ib/in3 is 0.697 ib/in3
  • The density of tungsten per cubic inch is 0.697 ib/in3

Now, you have the density of tungsten kg m3, let’s know the actual definition of the density of tungsten in detail. The melting point of tungsten is 3,422 0C

Definition Of Density Of Tungsten

The density of tungsten is defined as the ratio of mass to volume. In simple language, tungsten can be compatible with a cubic centimetre of space. The density of any metal or non-metal is directly proportional to the mass of that metal and inversely proportional to the volume of that metal or nonmetal. The definition of the density can be denoted in the equation form as,

The density of Tungsten = mass of Tungstenvolume of Tungsten g/cm3

In the symbolic form,

              D =    mv g/cm3

Where, d – the Tungsten density,

v – the volume of Tungsten, and

m – the mass of Tungsten

How To Calculate Density Of Tungsten?

To calculate the density of tungsten you need only the mass and volume of tungsten. To calculate the density, just need to follow the procedure given below.

  1. Take a small piece of Tungsten and measure its weight.
  2. To measure its weight, just hook it below the balance by using a light-weighted thread.
  3. Now, you have a mass of Tungsten, and you have to find its volume. So, to calculate volume use the water displacement method.
  4. Take a beaker and fill it with water and then immerse the same Tungsten piece into the water. Now, measure the volume of the beaker and you will get the volume of Tungsten.
  5. Now, divide the mass by volume you will get the Tungsten’s density.

Let’s understand with the help of an example.

A piece of Zinc of 1925 grams is with a volume of 100 cm3. What will be its density?

By using the density formula,

The density of Tungsten = mass of Tungstenvolume of Tungsten g/cm3

                                       = 1925/100

                                       = 19.25 g/cm3

FAQ

Is Tungsten The Most Dense Metal?

In the world of metals, tungsten is king. It is the heaviest and most dense metal in the world.

Is Tungsten Stronger Than Titanium?

Tungsten vs Titanium

As mentioned above, tungsten is the strongest of any natural metal (142,000 psi). But in terms of impact strength, tungsten is weak — it’s a brittle metal known to shatter on impact. On the other hand, Titanium has a tensile strength of 63,000 psi.

Is Tungsten Heavier Than Titanium?

Being the more solid and durable material, tungsten has a heavier weight and may feel as such when worn. Titanium, on the other hand, is incredibly lightweight even being so durable. If you have an affinity for lightweight materials and don’t want the heavier ring on your finger, stick with titanium

Is Tungsten Bulletproof?

Every material is bullet proof, as long as you have enough of it. Alternatively, any material can be penetrated by a bullet, provided it is thin enough. Tungsten is very dense and pretty hard. Both are usually good properties if you want to stop a bullet.

What Is The Density Of 95% Tungsten?

18.00 gm/cm³

With a density of 18.00 gm/cm³, the alloy is resistant to acids and therefore is suitable for hostile environments.

How Heavy Is 1 Cubic Inch Of Tungsten?

Cemented Tungsten Carbide is very heavy, with a density of . 54 pounds per cubic inch or 15 grams per cubic centimeter.

How Much Heavier Is Tungsten Than Steel?

The key properties of tungsten carbide are its density and hardness. Our formula has a density of approximately 14.6g/cm3, which is greater than lead at 11.3g/cm3 and our slides weigh almost twice as much as a steel one of the same design (steel has a density of around 7.8 g/cm3).

Conclusion

Density is one of the chemical properties of tungsten. Like density, there are also other chemical properties of tungsten such as melting point, boiling point, atomic number, electronic configuration, etc. tungsten was used extensively for the filaments of old-style incandescent light bulbs, but these have been phased out in many countries. This is because they are not very energy efficient, they produce more heat than light. Tungsten has the highest melting point of all metals and is alloyed with other metals to strengthen them. Now, you have understood the density of tungsten.
